Musing Monday #1

Hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading Musing Mondays asks you to muse about one of the following each week…

• Describe one of your reading habits.

• Tell us what book(s) you recently bought for yourself or someone else, and why you chose that/those book(s).

• What book are you currently desperate to get your hands on? Tell us about it!

• Tell us what you’re reading right now — what you think of it, so far; why you chose it; what you are (or, aren’t) enjoying it.

• Do you have a bookish rant? Something about books or reading (or the industry) that gets your ire up? Share it with us!

• Instead of the above questions, maybe you just want to ramble on about something else pertaining to books — let’s hear it, then!

My musing this week is ... a rant!

The British culture minister, Ed Vaizey, has put a temporary export ban on a ring that once belonged to Jane Austen and was recently purchased at auction by Kelley Clarkson for more than £150,000. His reasoning is that "Jane Austen's modest lifestyle and her early death mean that objects associated with her of any kind are extremely rare," he said, "So I hope that a UK buyer comes forward so this simple but elegant ring can be saved for the nation."

What a load of horse manure!

Kelly Clarkson bought that ring in good faith and it belongs to her. If the ring is such a national treasure why didn't the British government buy it and put it in the British Museum?

Jane Austen's legacy lies in her body of work not in her baubles!

The cheek!

  1. I agree. If the British government wanted it why didn't the intervene when it went on sale? Also how is it fair for them to try to hold something when it belongs to someone else now?

  3. I agree, if they wanted it to stay they should have purchased it. Let Kelly take it home. Here is my muse: MM

  4. Goodness! that's really sick! they shouldn't have put it up for auction in the first place if they have misgivings with "Jane Austen's modest lifestyle.." so sad...
